Arthur A. Widmer (1897-1991) was an American Realist who became well known for his paintings of the Delaware Water Gap. Primarily a landscape painter, he worked in the impasto style, using rich colors and the broad strokes of a pallet knife to depict the woods and water of his native Northeast Pennsylvania. He was a contemporary of Cullen Yates, Jack Savitsky and Sterling Strausser.

A beautiful and fitting website to our grandfather (“Pop-Pop” as we called him…”Pop-cubed…to the third power” as my children…his great-grand children…called him). I suspect that this website was created by my writer cousin, Jeff Widmer. Kudos, Jeff. Great job! He was certainly a unique and special man! And REALLY nice to see his entire body of work. He would have been sooo TICKLED by this!
I HAVE A PAINTING OF YOUR GRANDFATHERS CALLED”BROADHEADS CREEK
I have a painting by AA Widmer called Swiftwater. It belonged to my mother who used to work at Wyckoff’s dept. store in Stroudsburg.
Our organization, Lizzie’s Circle, was gifted one last night to use in our silent auction. It is such a special piece, being of our beautiful Pocono region and done by a local artist! On the back, he wrote his address on King Street as well as what I believe says “Hodston Farm Section RD5”
Hi, Christine. He might have written Huston Farm Section RD5.
I was fortunate enough to win this beautiful artwork last evening, at the event held by Lizzie’s Circle. I bid on this for my husband Tom, who has many fond memories of “Shorty”. He was thrilled with the painting! He was a young child, but has vivid memories of Shorty as he sat at his easel painting. He also loved his magic tricks. I believe Hauston Farm Section RD #5 is written on the back.
Just discovered this great site. I live in Houston and purchased a Widmer at one of the local resale shops a few years agoi with a great hand made and painted frame. I really collect early Texas and Houston art but I couldn’t resist his wonderful painting of a covered bridge which I now feel must be a Pennsylvania one.
Is his work in any museum collections or has he been featured in shows?
If his work appears in museums, the family is unaware of it. If you or anyone owns one of his paintings and would like to share, please email an image and a brief description to arthurawidmer (at) gmail (dot) com and we will post it on this website.
My family has many beautiful paintings that Shorty Widmer had painted. Marion made dried flower pics. He and his wife Marion lived in a farm cottage our Uncle had built, Harold Waidelich and our Aunt, his wife Arvesta Waidelich. I think at that time it was called Ramblewood acres?!
My Dad Charles Yoch and myself Ann Louise Yoch knew the Widmers well, I spent many days visiting them and running errands with them as Uncle Shorty (as I was asked to call him) sang a song he taught me about; waking up in the morning where the morning glories grow. I now still sing it. That was back 1963-1964. I was 8 and 9 yrs old then, now 65. They brought alot of happiness to our families lives. We were all blessed to have known them. I will organize pics of the paintings and post them on the email I saw posted for you to see. Reach out to my email if you see this. Stay safe. The Yochs now in Shawnee. Kansas.
I have a still life of Shorty Widmer. He lived behind the house I grew up in 50 years a6. He was a special man. The painting is hanging in my dining room.
